Question:
I am getting ready to debate a Jehovah's Witness about Bible prophecy. They believe that Jesus returned invisibly in 1914. They come to this date by jumping all over the Bible and taking prophecies about the 70 weeks of years, a day for a year and the 70 years of desolation mentioned in Jeremiah. The main date for them is 1914 but it rests on the 607 B.C. date which they believe is when Jerusalem was destroyed. The Bible shows the Jews returned home in 539 and the 70 years that Jeremiah was talking about meant Babylon's domination over Judah AND the surrounding nations. Also all of the secular evidence which is also in harmony with the BIble points to 587 B.C. as the destruction of Jerusalem. I am trying to show the J.W. that their timelines are off which is a very important part of their belief system. Any information would be appreciated.
Nick
Answer:
Dear Nick,
I hate to tell you, but you might as well go out and beat your head against the wall rather than trying to debate with a Jehovah Witness. The fact is that they were three waves of captivity: One in 606 BCE, again in 597 BCE and the final one at which time Jerusalem was destroyed was on the 9th day of the Jewish month of Av in 586 BCE. Cyrus of Medo, Persia issued a decree in 538 BCE allowing them to return home. They set out in 537 and arrived in 536 and started rebuilding the temple, which was finally completed in 516, fulfilling the 70-year prophesy of Jeremiah.

I would suggest you Google Jehovah Witnesses on the Internet and read several of the articles posted there. Or, you can Google “Russellism.” Russell was the founder of the movement and was put on trial for multiple sexual indiscretions before his death. They used to be called Russelites until the name was changed to Jehovah Witnesses. They have got quite a history … very colorful … but their train got derailed off of the track a long time ago and they have been derailed ever since.
Best wishes, Roy
