Question:
Would you explain Joshua 1:8 in context? I have heard it means meditate is to mutter the word of god to make faith, etc. I do not agree with that, but feel it means to focus on the Scriptures to learn how to live for the Lord and to conduct life, etc. Please explain this verse thanks. Stephen
Answer:
Dear Stephen, Joshua 1:8 Translated reads as follows:
The book of the Torah (Five books of Moses) shall not depart from your mouth and you shall meditate or muse on it day and night in order that you might guard or watch yourselves to do all that is written therein because then you will be successful in your ways and then you will have understanding.
This passage does not refer to sitting around and uttering a mantra as in oriental religion. It means to give careful consideration, i.e., study that which is written in the Torah and meditate on it or think about it. The word can mean meditate as a soliloquy as if you are talking to yourself. That soliloquy is done to reinforce that which is written in order that you might act upon it and be successful and prosperous as a result.
