| [1] There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. [2] This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”- posted: November 03 2005 | | More... |

| The words in last week’s story of Jesus raising Lazarus are very similar to the words used in the story of the preparation of Jesus’ body and his interment. We refer you to a passage we posted on April 18, 2005 from John 20, Verses 3-7. For further emphasis on the point I want to make, we will also translate John 19, Verses 39-40.
John 19:39-40 (New King James Version)
[39] And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. [40] Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

| The passage for this week is from John, Chapter 11, and it focuses on the resurrection of Lazarus. The information recorded here is of such import that we will actually break our discussion into two parts to be continued next week. The setting is the death of Lazarus. Jesus heard of Lazarus’s death and came quickly to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. The story begins in John 11, Verse 1, but we are going to begin with verse 38.
[38] Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. [39] Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
[40] Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” [41] Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. [42] And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” [43] Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” [44] And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
